The GW Advent Calendar started off with a nice bang with End Times Spells, and it seemed everyone was covering it. Notice anything now? Like those tumble weeds rolling by? What started off with high expectations this year, has turned into short painting guides and wallpaper releases.

But GW doesnt have the only Advent Calendar Going on right now. Hawk Wargames has their Advent Calendar with new artwork for all the factions.

Please remember that Presence of Faeit is an editorial, my personal opinions of the things going on around us in the hobby.

Last year was the first year Games Workshop started doing advent calendars. I am sure there are some others out there doing them, but it was a first for Games Workshop and Hawk Wargames.

So far we are into day 7 of the Advent Calendar, and only two of the days have had much interest, and those built upon the Dark Vengeance boxset for Dark Angels and the Crimson Slaughter. The End Times spells were a decent because if you missed out on Khaine, it gave you a chance to get all the spells you missed.

Last Year I remember being excited on a daily basis for each release, with very few that I did not want to pick up. That excitement is quickly fading for this years calendar.

Today's release is just a precursor to that feeling, as Digital Editions Wallpapers- "Imperial" was released. I am a huge fan of artwork, but I want to see new images that give us some ideas of what may be down the road. When I saw that we were getting artwork this morning...... it was a huge sigh..... simply because I saw that it was wallpapers- "Imperial" (meaning that some of the symbols in the following weeks will most likely be wallpaper releases instead of dataslates).

OK, so 3 out of 7 so far have been decent releases (not painting or wallpaper). I am expecting some cool things still out of Games Workshop for this advent calendar. I am going to imagine that the future will hold for us....... yea, more wallpapers of art we have already seen, but also some more dataslates. I am hoping for a Dark Eldar one, and I expect that as we get closer to Christmas we will have some more excitement.

What I would of liked to have seen?........ Character dataslates, some new and some covering lost characters from the past. Perhaps a new weapon dataslate for space marines? Some formations as well, and then finally mix in a couple (means no more than 2) painting guides or even a large wallpaper event (with hints of a future release.... like Necrons). There are enough codex armies in 40k and Armies in Fantasy / End Times to really fill the advent calendar.

Last year was previews of new models that were to be released in the coming months. This year, I had heard that the models were not ready for previews, but that Hawk Wargames had new artwork for the factions. New artwork?...... Well that most likely means something new is coming that we have not heard of yet, otherwise there would be no reason to create the artwork. This has me intrigued and looking forward to each image on a daily basis. I also have heard that there will be something really special this year in the advent calendar.

I like the fact that the advent calendar is not just a means to sell you more things, instead the new artwork is an opportunity to win an escape pod (which are only available at events), by writing a caption for each new piece of art on their facebook page.

So whatever is going on, the Dropzone Commander Advent Calendar has me checking a couple times in the morning to see what is coming next.
