A lot of long time Eldar fans really want Phil Kelly to be writing the Eldar codex that we expect out next month. This morning though I received an email that telling me that it really wasn't such a mystery who is writing the codex, because he was told by the author himself that he was doing it. So take a look at what was said.

I wasn't there, so I do assume that this was said, however, I always take it with the understanding that its quite possible he was not officially the author at this time, or that things change since this event occurred. I seem to recall something like this being said.

Please remember that this is a rumor. Nothing is official until we actually get the leaks in hand, or even the finished product for that much.

just saw that ur asking who will write the Eldar codex and i can tell you that.

Two years ago on Games Day Germany Phil Kelly told me hes so exited about the "new" Dark Eldar that he has written alot about Eldar in his little textbook.

I didnt think its a mysterie that Phil Kelly is working on the Eldar book.

    5. That's odd. I asked him at GD Chicago last year as well, and all he would tell me was it's "in good hands." >.<

  2. Thats funny cos at UK Gamesday 2011 Phil Kelly told me personally that he didn't want to do Eldar again cos it'd be wierd to redo his own work.

Don't get me wrong I want a Kelly codex again....

  3. I think Phil does good codexs and for the longest time I've wanted him to do Eldar. However I'm worried we'll get another patch codex like the current book. It's a great book but nothing wow in it.

    1. Remember the Phil Kelly created the Heldrake. And Nurgle Soul Grinders with 2+ cover saves

    2. Yea I think it might be because the current Eldar dex came out at the end of 4th when GW was toning everything down. So I think that's why there's nothing wow in it. Hoping PK is allowed to go nuts and give us some real cool stuff.

      At least it's not Ward!!

    3. While the heldrake and nurgal grinders are good they arnt game breaking. They are relativly expensive and have things they cant kill effectivly.

    4. Phil Kelly himself has said numerous times that he would NOT be writing the new Eldar Codex as he'd be competing with his own work.

Secondly, Ward would have put rules in that were more fun to play with anyway; coupled, however, with awkward fluff.

So have one guy write the fluff and the other write the rules. :)

  4. My biggest concern is that like the DE and 4th ed Eldar codex he will be too conservative. Many things need rules overhaul, massive points decreases or both. The Eldar dex also needs a new breath of life since its essentially been the same since 2nd ed and I don't know if Kelly will or can do that. The only real plus side of Kelly doing this book means that Criddace INST lol.

    2. Or he will over compensate because of the ridicule he's received.

    3. As a long-time Nid I wouldn't mind a healthy does of belated apologetic overcompensation on the next Nid Dex. Just sayin'.

  7. Congrats to Eldar players! Hope PK does Dark Eldar and Wolves again too! I'm an avid player of both, and like how they've held up in 6th for the most part. Only a few tweaks needed here and there.

  8. Oh thank goodness. Go Phil! Here's to hoping you do DE too!

  9. 1. Fix guardians (24" shuriken catapults?) cost drop?
    2. Give me a reason to run Striking Scorpions and Howling Banshees.
    3. assault doors on a wave serpent?

    1. how right are those you write above!!!!!!!! PLEASE HEAR OUR SCREAMS banshees and scorpion back on the fields!!!!!!!

    2. guardians with 24" range would be such a boon. So awesome.

2 & 3 i care most about a reason for Scorps. I have a full squad that I am actually proud of my paintjob for, and haven't run them in a long time.

      Delete
    3. You want 24" assault 2 shuriken catapults? a cost drop and heavy weapons in the squad? I doubt that's likely to happen. This is 6th Ed. There will be points drops, rules tweaks and a small number of new units. Likely flyers, construct and vehicle. I can't see this being a massive necrons style overhaul. Those days are gone methinks.

    4. Wish listing: banshees with something to deal with overwatch (maybe an exarch power or something) so they can at least get into cc. Maybe scorpions with something for overwatch (mandiblasters?) to make me want to use them. Guardians with a weapon platform for every teN (just want it, it would be sweet) A reasonable points cost for rangers/pathfinders (along with other units) seeing as kroot (who can fill the same role with less rules, -1save,-1bs) are a minimum of 36% the cost. And hopefully something to spice up the Viper.

Doomlisting: a giant nerf bat to wraiths, p lords, wave serpents & eldrad. keeping the most "fine"cast models in all of 40k.

What I hope and fear PK, please make it more hope than fear.

      Delete
    5. how does one 'nerf' the PLs? they're already bottom-of-the-barrel bad.

Codex needs a major overhaul in rules. Not so much in models, but definitely in rules.

If we get a patch, i will not be a pleased camper.

    6. lords without ew is what I am worried about.

  10. Didn't we have a post like a month ago which made it clear that the person who writes the fluff is fairly independent of the guys who write the rules?

  11. Exciting to think that it's Phil. He has a passion for the race and that's a great place to start.
I personally would like to see zero points decreases. Just get our units current. Juice up the Spiders packs. 18" ShuriCats. S5AP4 for AvengerCats.
Grenades for Guardians (and Shining Spears for that matter).
I'm using the hell out of my 4th Dex while I can because I am terrified that my long list of simple 6th Ed updates will instead be replaced with a very tough to swallow codex.

  12. Maybe this time he actually write the codex not just use copy paste from the old one.

    1. I'll elaborate...Phil Kelly does not write good codexes.

4th ed Eldar has not "held up well". Even in its prime the best it could do was spam Harlequins in Falcon Grav tanks. You can bank on Eldrad, War Walkers and wraithguard being terrible now because that is what everyone is currently using. Therefore forcing you to buy new models.

Dark Eldar is not a great codex. It has horrible internal balance which leads everyone to spam lists and now gimmicky deathstars with Eldar allies in order to compete. Yes the models are gorgeous but Phil had nothing to do with that. Also fluff-wise he managed to make the DE come off as more evil than Chaos Space Marines or Daemons.

Phil is also responsible for space wolves missile spam that went on for months until 6th ed hit.

And most Recently lets look at Daemons and CSMs.

Daemons are completely jacked up now. They might as well be a completely different army. All tzeentch units nerfed across the the board with the exception of the LoC. Massive amounts of dice rolling before the game starts and warpstorm table. Warpflame which is one of the most retarded rules in the game. And the best part is that they are an assault based army with no grenades (except for a wonky cannon) and that because of daemonic instability it now backfires on you big time if you happen to lose assault.

CSM is full of meh choices and a lot of overpriced ones. No wonder people spam heldrakes, noise marines, and plague marines as that's all it has going for it.

    2. I would have to agree with this Phil isn't creative enough to write original rules. He just take a rule and breaks it by removing the down side. Like in the case of long fangs multiple targets or daemons fearless.

It does show that he at least somewhat understands the rules and how they work together unlike ward, who cant write a rule without creating a paradox in 3 other rules.

I think the best example of why GW games designers are so terrabad at what they do shows in a WD interview with phil when Chaos space marines came out. He was asked about designing the codex and rambled on about the look and feel of the codex but never once mentioned even mentioned anything about the rules in the book. He must think people just buy the models and spend hours painting them just to play with them like a 5 year old with a toy truck.

    3. Ha! As a long time chaos player and a collector of daemons for the last couple of years,I agree...the new codices by Phil have been interesting, but not really balanced.space wolves in particular were ridiculously good, but every other codex has had too many duds.I hate the gk codex but at least each unit is viable...a lot more than can be said for eldar or daemons!

      Delete
  15. Uhm... was hoping someone else would getva throw at doing the faildar, all if Phils Eldar books have ultimately sucked. DE were good for about as long as it took them to poop out GK, If the new book follows his usual pattern Eldar can look forward to another decade of 40k whipping boy dom.

  16. Hopefully we will get a decent balanced and well costed codex this time. No more of being the joke of 40k!
